Policy Director

Remote | Full-time

We are looking for an experienced, determined, and talented Policy Director with 8-12 years of progressive policy advocacy campaign experience.

Salary: $91,000-$114,000/year,  depending on experience. 

Location: Remote, no location requirement but a very slight preference for the Washington, DC area.

Travel: Travel to DC will be required once/month for candidates who do not live in the DC area.

About the position: Athena is seeking a Policy Director to strategize, coordinate, and lead the coalition’s policy campaigns across issues, including: antitrust, surveillance, worker rights, and technology policy. This is a dynamic position that works across the coalition – with worker centers, grassroots organizations, and larger public policy organizations – to engage policy makers and agencies on that range of issues.  The Policy Director will convene and coordinate a set of tech policy and antitrust advocates within the coalition to develop and implement campaign strategy.

Job responsibilities: 

  • Track and coordinate coalition members’ public policy advocacy at the state and federal level;
  • Manage interactions with policy makers, their staff, committees, and caucuses;
  • Coordinate public policy outreach efforts with in-district and grassroots advocacy efforts;
  • Represent the coalition in stakeholder meetings, conferences, and at other gatherings;
  • Maintain and build ally relationships aligned with the coalition principles and goals;
  • Work within a comprehensive campaign team to develop policy advocacy strategies;
  • Provide strategic advice to Athena members on evolving political dynamics and strategies that advance coalition campaigns and political mission;
  • Convene and organize a coalition-wide working group to regularly advise, implement shared political strategy across issue areas, with an eye toward identifying overlaps and connections;
  • Serve as a resource for coalition members undertaking their own policy advocacy;
  • Regularly report findings to members, leaders, and others within the coalition;
  • Participate in regular coalition staff, leadership and membership meetings.

Qualifications: 

  • Dedication to challenge racial capitalism and corporate power and build a powerful multiracial movement that can win material gains for working people and shift the dynamics of power in our country;
  • 8-12 years of policy advocacy and campaigning;
  • Experience in tech and/or anti-trust policy preferred, but not required, if the candidate has strong campaign and coalition experience;
  • Demonstrated experience facilitating groups, planning meetings, and driving shared strategies;
  • Experience participating in a coalition and/or coordinated campaign;
  • Experience working on a national campaign;   
  • Ability to express complex policy ideas to a wide and diverse audience;
  • Strong copywriting and editing skills;
  • Ability to express complex policy ideas to a wide and diverse audience digitally;
  • Experience in policy advocacy with federal agencies and/or Congress highly preferred but not required;
  • Experience working on multiple policy campaigns at once preferred but not required.

The work schedule can at times be greater than 40 hours per week and includes evening and weekend meetings and events, as necessary. It is not a strictly 9am-5pm position.
